(Alexandria, VA and Washington, DC) – The National Alliance for Care at Home (the Alliance) issued the following statement in response to the passage of the budget reconciliation legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that will result in major changes to the Medicaid program.
The budget reconciliation legislation, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives this morning, is gravely concerning for the Alliance and our provider members who deliver home and community-based services, home health, hospice, and palliative care to children with serious health conditions, older adults, and people with disabilities. The severe reduction in federal Medicaid spending, estimated to be more than $700 billion over the next decade, will have a sharply negative impact on eligibility and access to care.
The Alliance continues to believe there are opportunities for common ground and agreement on reasonable program integrity provisions to the Medicaid program, as well as opportunities to shift care into more person-centered and less costly services. Unfortunately, the reductions approved by the House this morning do not address care improvements and instead will reduce access to care for millions of needy and deserving Americans.
We understand this process is not yet complete, and we strongly encourage the Senate to rethink the spending cuts approved by the House and work with healthcare stakeholders to craft legislation that both safeguards taxpayers’ money and protects access to care for millions of older adults, people with disabilities, and children with special care needs.
