Hospice Manager Development Program
About
The Manger Development Program (MDP) is the only comprehensive management training program that provides timely information and helps managers develop the skills they need to meet the challenges and changes they face managing programs, systems, and people. Originally a program for new to mid-level hospice managers, this program is now being expanded across the continuum to serve all rising care-at-home leaders and managers.
This dynamic asynchronous training and development program provides access to national hospice experts and peers in hospice management. The Hospice MDP is offered through national conferences and online learning opportunities.
The Manager Development Program includes three developmental levels.
- Level I Foundational course
- Level II virtual modules
- Level III assessment review
Level I
Level I consists of a Foundational Course.
There are multiple ways to participate in the Foundational Course:
- Virtual (offerings in January/February and May/June annually)
- In-person (in conjunction with Alliance’s Conference)
The Foundational Course is a multi-level developmental program for new and aspiring healthcare managers. Starting with orientation, the enduring and important values that undergird the provision of care at home, the course provides information about regulations and standards, includes a leadership assessment and model to help managers determine employee’s needs, helps develop critical thinking skills in the healthcare manager, and teaches strategies to employ during interviewing, coaching, feedback and evaluation processes.
Learning Outcomes:
Define, explain, and identify keys to the effective use of behavioral interviewing, feedback, coaching and performance appraisal
Describe a values-based approach to management and leadership
Determine the hospice manager’s role in compliance and accountability
Assess individual leadership styles and adaptability
Discuss the relationship between your style as a manager and problem solving and outcomes
Level II
Level II of the MDP consists of “enhancement” modules.
Managers are required to take Addressing Ethical Dilemmas and Managing with an Eye on Finances in addition to 4 other courses that best meet their needs from a menu of options to achieve the Level II Designation. Once fully developed across the care continuum, managers will also be required to complete an additional regulatory and compliance module specific to their care at home field.

Level III
Level III of the MDP is the continued professional and leadership development of the MDP participant.
Participants will undergo a rigorous assessment process, identify, work on and complete (or demonstrate significant progress toward) a specific professional development goal with a Leadership Coach, evaluate their work toward the goal and identify a goal for continued professional development following completion of the MDP Level III. All components are tied to the participant’s organization, ensuring that professional and leadership development advances the potential of the individual within the context of their organization and job responsibilities.
