(Alexandria, VA and Washington, DC) – Earlier this week, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Congressman Morgan Griffith (VA-09), Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, Congressman Jason Smith (MO-08), Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, Congressman David Schweikert (AZ-01), Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, and Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-16), Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) requesting a meeting on concerning evidence, detailed in the letter, that points to large-scale, ongoing Medicare fraud in Los Angeles County. The National Alliance for Care at Home (The Alliance) supports the Committees’ efforts and is aligned on ensuring program integrity within home health and hospice.

The letter states: “HHAs and hospice agencies provide care to some of the most vulnerable seniors in America – Medicare beneficiaries who require care at home and at the end of life. Millions of beneficiaries rely on home health and hospice each year, and most providers of these services seek only the best interest of their patients.”

The Alliance has worked closely with CMS, lawmakers, and regulators, in partnership with its members and the broader care at home community, to ensure the ideals at the heart of these care models are upheld in the practice of care. Recently, the Alliance attended a listening session with Dr. Oz to discuss fighting fraud, waste, and abuse in home health and hospice.

Additionally, as part of an ongoing dialogue with CMS, the Alliance, in partnership with LeadingAge, submitted a letter to Dr. Mehmet Oz regarding Recommendations to Strengthen Home Health and Hospice Program Integrity.

The vast majority of home health and hospice providers deliver high-quality care with integrity and compassion where most people want to receive it – at home. While limited, these bad actors threaten to upend a beloved and successful part of our healthcare system.

The Alliance supports this action by Congress to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse in home health and hospice in a highly targeted and effective manner. Rooting out bad actors is a critical component to protecting access to high-quality care at home. Learn more about our history of defending program integrity.

The Alliance looks forward to continuing to collaborate with lawmakers on this important initiative.
